The Church Planted ~ The Church Enduring .... because of Him
It was a late summer evening in 1952. A tent revival was held on the same ground as the church now stands today. Hilltop Baptist Church was organized as a missionary church, from the Northside Baptist Church, with 47 charter members. N. W. Pitts, an Associational Missionary, largely influenced the organization of the church. John Cheyne, Mission Pastor, was Hilltop's pastor. The Sunday School and church were held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Simpson, which was located at 801 E. First Street, Weatherford, TX.
Maybe you know some of the charter members ~
Horace Thompson, Inez Thompson, Linda Thompson, Pearl Driver, Bobbye Driver, Henry Driver, Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Bigham, Joyce Barham, A.S. Barham, Billy Wayne Herron, Lee Arvin Herron, Danny Griffin, Dimple Stults, Dorothy Swearington, Geraldine Ashley, Loraine Smethers, Bonnie Smethers, Mary E. Smethers, Patsy Smethers, and Mr. and Mrs. Perry McDonald.
In January of 1953, Mr. and Mrs. Simpson donated the land and the church building was built. Hilltop was organized as a church on June 23, 1954. The parsonage was purchased in 1960 from W.T. Driver. The church building was renovated in the summer of 1985 with the entrance being moved from the north side to the west side. The renovated building was dedicated on September 8th. However, on September 13th the building was flooded making it necessary to redo the interior of the church.
Jimmy Dobbs came as pastor in 1954. He was followed by Bailey Hagar, Bill Saylor (who later went into Pioneer Missions), Reece Harris, James Stacy, Pratt Dean (who later went into Foreign Missionary), Kenneth Tierce (who later went into Pioneer Missions), N.W. Pitts, Dale Pruitt, Jim Richards (who later went into Foreign Missions), Harvey Graham, Dean Daniel, Donald Thompson, Jack Frazier, David Murrell, Tim Richardson, and our present pastor, Jim Barron.
